Congressman Mike Pompeo Named ACU "Conservative in the Spotlight"

The American Conservative Union (ACU) is pleased to name Kansas Congressman Mike Pompeo (Lifetime ACU Rating: 97%) our next “Conservative in the Spotlight,” a distinction awarded to a conservative leader who acts boldly to defend conservative principles.

“Congressman Mike Pompeo is the ideal nominee to become the new CIA Director,” said ACU Chairman Matt Schlapp. “His service as a military veteran and his service in Congress where he has become widely known as an intelligence expert, gives him the experience and the backbone necessary to become an outstanding leader at the CIA and keep the American people safe from enemies abroad.”

While in Congress, Congressman Pompeo has served tirelessly as a strong conservative leader on both the Energy and Commerce Committee and the House Intelligence Committee. He was also appointed to serve on the House Select Benghazi Committee in 2014 due to his vast national security experience.

Recently, Congressman Pompeo was nominated by President-Elect Donald Trump to be the Director of Central Intelligence because of his strong background in national security and intelligence issues. The nomination was met with praise from conservatives as someone with the integrity, intellect, and experience necessary to lead the CIA further into today’s 21st century world. As a military veteran, Congressman Pompeo understands that the world is a dangerous place and that the CIA plays a vital role in combatting terrorism. He has strongly supported the CIA’s counterterrorism efforts and been a vocal critic of the disastrous Iran Deal. He has also supported keeping the prison at Guantanamo Bay open to keep dangerous terrorists out of the American homeland.

Before being elected to Congress in 2010, Congressman Pompeo served as the CEO of Thayer Aerospace (TA), an aerospace firm he founded in 1997, and later as President of Sentry International (SI). In addition to his vast business experience, Congressman Pompeo served as a cavalry officer in the U.S. Army where his leadership skills enabled him to reach the rank of Captain.

Congressman Pompeo is a graduate of West Point, graduating first in his class, and later received a law degree from Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. He and his wife Susan have one son.
