WASHINGTON DC – American Conservative Union (ACU) Chairman Matt Schlapp released the following statement in response to the announcement that the U.S. will normalize relations with Cuba:
“Almost 50 years ago my father-in-law endured 6 painful years in the Castro brothers’ gulag for attempting to stop the communist revolution and end Castro’s life.
“The regime took my father-in-law’s land, his business, and his freedom.
“His optimism, determination, and prayers to the Mother of God led to his release.
“America welcomed him and he is proud to call America his home, in fact, President Reagan remains his hero.
“While I am relieved to hear about the release of Alan Gross, President Obama’s actions today fail to stand up for true democratic reforms in Cuba.
“Today President Obama insulted and betrayed the Cuban freedom fighters who fled Cuba with just the shirt on their backs.
“My father-in-law, now in the winter of a heroic man’s life, deserves the peace of mind knowing that America will always stand for human rights and human dignity.
“President Obama’s actions today are destined to join the Bay of Pigs in the annals of presidential betrayals to the Cuban people and those who love freedom.
“On behalf of all who have suffered at the hand of dictatorships and tyranny, we would ask that every American who seeks to be our next president stand up and declare that this action will not stand.”71 Days Until CPAC
