Statement by American Conservative Union Chairman Al Cardenas on the Upcoming Fiscal Cliff
The federal government does not have a revenue problem. It has a spending problem. Four years of trillion dollar deficits, massive increases in government regulation and the threat of higher taxes have given the United States the weakest recovery from a recession since World War II. There is no economic reason that higher taxes need to be part of a solution to the so-called “fiscal cliff” and the American Conservative Union will oppose any effort to raise taxes that will prevent increased revenue that comes from economic growth.
For the better part of three decades, Americans for Tax Reform and its founder, Grover Norquist, have played a critical role in keeping the tax burden on the American people down. Time and again, the pledge made by many members of Congress to their constituents to oppose tax increases have served to hold them accountable and for this ACU and American taxpayers everywhere owe a debt of thanks. ACU is proud to have Grover Norquist as a member of its Board of Directors.
We also agree with the House Speaker, John Boehner, when he says that his Republican conference is taking the principled position in opposing tax rate increases. We urge the members of his conference to follow his advice and “call out the Democrats who are saying no to spending cuts and who advocate going over the fiscal cliff.”
