The American Conservative Union (ACU) has named Senator Jeff Sessions (ACU Lifetime Rating: 94.21%) our next “Conservative in the Spotlight,” a distinction awarded to a conservative leader who acts boldly to defend conservative principles.
“Senator Sessions understood earlier than most that there was a conservative uprising in the country,” said ACU Chairman Matt Schlapp. “ACU has been honored to have him speak at many of our events across the country this year. Now as Donald Trump’s pick to be the Attorney General, Jeff Sessions will continue to be an important conservative voice.”
Senator Jeff Sessions was the first Senator to endorse President-Elect Donald J. Trump in the primary and never wavered in his support for the Republican party’s nominee during a tumultuous campaign season. He became one of President-Elect Trump’s key campaign advisors, playing a critical role in preparing him for debates and formulating a strong immigration and border control agenda for the Trump campaign. Today, it was announced that President-Elect Trump will nominate Sessions for U.S. Attorney General.
As a United States Senator for the State of Alabama since 1997, Sessions has made the principles of conservatism his priority. He was rewarded for his efforts by winning 97% of the votes cast in his 2014 re-election to the U.S. Senate. Sessions has long advocated for a strong military, upholding the rule of law, limiting the role of government, and spurring economic growth—conservative goals that ACU shares. Senator Sessions is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and is the Chairman of its Strategic Forces Subcommittee. He is a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and serves as the Chairman of that Committee’s Immigration and the National Interest Subcommittee. Furthermore, Senator Sessions also serves on the Senate Budget Committee and the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.
In addition to having been nicknamed a “budget hawk,” he served in the 112th and 113th Congresses as the Ranking Member on the Senate Budget Committee where he fought for fiscal responsibility in federal spending. During this period, and despite being an underdog as far as political and governmental power, Senator Sessions’ strong resolve against the Obama Administration’s reckless stimulus and other excessive government spending helped the short-handed Republicans in Congress force President Obama to cut in half his annual $1 trillion deficits.
Senator Sessions was born in Selma, Alabama. He received a B.A. from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, before he attended the University of Alabama Law School. After obtaining his law degree, he served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1973 to 1986 where he achieved the rank of Captain. After serving as an Assistant U.S. Attorney starting in 1975, Senator Sessions was appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1981 to serve as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama until 1993. In 1986, he was nominated by President Reagan to be a judge in the U.S. District Court for Alabama’s Southern District. In November 1994, Senator Sessions was elected as the Attorney General of the State of Alabama. Then in 1996, Senator Sessions was elected to the U.S. Senate, where in 2002 he became the first Republican reelected to the Senate from the State of Alabama since Reconstruction.
