Florida’s 2017 State Ratings – One of the Nation’s Leading ACUF Award Recipients

January 30, 2018

ALEXANDRIA, VA – The American Conservative Union Foundation (ACUF) has just released its ratings for the 2017 meeting of the Florida Legislature. These ratings, a portion of the comprehensive and nationwide ratings released by the ACUF, are designed to reflect how elected officials view the role of government and are helpful in illustrating how both chambers of the legislature as well as individual members’ prioritize a wide variety of issue areas that directly affect Floridians.

The ACUF has reviewed each piece of legislation voted on in both the Senate and House of Representatives to produce average scores for each chamber as well as individual scores for each sitting member.

Florida legislators took pen to paper on various issues during the 2017 legislative session including religious freedom, Second Amendment rights, alcoholic beverage sales, sanctuary cities, tax relief, and school choice. One or both chambers voted to:

“In 2017, legislators passed laws ensuring that Floridians across the state are protected from tax hikes, free to express their religious beliefs, and are able to enjoy the benefits of an expanded free market,” said ACU Chairman Matt Schlapp. “It’s no wonder that Florida legislators received more ACUF awards for the 2017 session than the majority of other state’s legislators across the country.””

The scores of both the Florida House and Senate increased from last year’s ratings, suggesting that the legislative body has made improvements. The Florida Senate’s average score increased by 6% points this year – from 65% in 2016 to 71% in 2017 – and the House’s score increased by 4% – from 67% in 2016 to 71% this year.
