Congressman Tom Price Named ACU “Conservative in the Spotlight”

February 1, 2017

The American Conservative Union (ACU) is pleased to name Georgia Congressman Tom Price (Lifetime ACU Rating: 96%) our next “Conservative in the Spotlight,” a distinction awarded to a conservative leader who acts boldly to defend conservative principles.

“As an orthopedic surgeon and professor of medicine, Congressman Price has the experience in both the private and public sectors to make dynamic conservative reforms as HHS Secretary,” said ACU Chairman Matt Schlapp.  “His leadership in Congress on healthcare and the budget have proven to conservatives that he has the experience and philosophical grounding to make the Department of Health and Human Services work on behalf of all Americans.”

As a Congressman, Tom Price’s strong fiscal conservatism made him a natural leader as the Chairman of the House Committee on the Budget and as an indispensable member of the House Committee on Ways and Means.  Over time, Congressman Price closely studied the budgetary and healthcare fields, making him become a noted expert.

Due to his expertise, President Donald Trump recently nominated Congressman Price to be the new Secretary of Health and Human Services.  The Price nomination has been met with popular acclaim by Americans who understand it as another step closer to the end of the disastrous Obamacare plan.  In Congress, Tom Price was a vocal leader on repealing and replacing Obamacare and offered free market solutions to strengthen the healthcare industry.  Improving quality, decreasing burdensome regulations, lowering costs, and maximizing coverage for all Americans will continue to be a priority for Congressman Price in this new administration.

Before serving in Congress, Congressman Price worked as an orthopedic surgeon.  He was both an Assistant Professor and the Medical Director of the Orthopedic Clinic at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.  He served in the Georgia State Senate from 1997 to 2005, where he became Georgia’s first ever Republican Senate Majority Leader.

Congressman Price is a graduate of the University of Michigan attaining both his Bachelors and Doctor of Medicine degrees, and he completed his residency at Emory University in Atlanta. He and his wife Betty have one son, Robert.
