WASHINGTON D.C. – The American Conservative Union Foundation (ACU) has announced its ratings for the 2015 meeting of the Massachusetts General Court. ACU Chairman Matt Schlapp said it is not surprising that Massachusetts ranks 48th out of 50 states in our conservative rankings.
“The supermajorities of Democrats in the legislature continued to promote their liberal agenda and defeated any attempt by the newly installed Republican Governor to bring fiscal responsibility back to the state,” Schlapp said. “To top it off, the legislature overrode the Governor’s veto of an unneeded new bureaucracy, the State Climatologist, and refused to allow an outside audit of the House financial accounts.”
Schlapp noted one ray of light in the darkness, as the Senate defeated an amendment that would have required owners of foreclosed homes to rent the properties to those who had defaulted on their mortgage until the property was sold.
For the first time in our nation’s history, a detailed scorecard has been produced for all 50-state legislative bodies across the full spectrum of conservative issues, with scores for approximately 8,000 individual legislators. Like our Congressional ratings that have been published for 45 consecutive years, ACU’s state ratings reflect how elected officials view the role of government in an individual’s life. Massachusetts legislators with the strongest scores consistently voted with the ideals articulated in the U.S. Constitution.
A complete list of the 2015 ratings for Massachusetts and the votes they were based on can be found here: http://acuratings.conservative.org/state-ratings-2015/.
ACU researches and selects a wide range of bills that reflect a member’s adherence to conservative principles, whether they be economic, social, cultural, or government integrity. Legislators who score above 80% in each state receive awards for their commitment to conservative principles. As President Ronald Reagan stated, “The person who agrees with you 80% of the time is an ally.”
The following Representatives and Senators will receive a 2015 ACU Ratings Award:
Representatives: BARROWS, GIFFORD, HILL, JONES, LYONS, McKENNA, MIRRA, ORRALL, and POIRIER
Senators: HEDLUND, and TARR
