ACU STATEMENT ON CRUZ/VITTER AMENDMENT ON VOTER REGISTRATION

The American Conservative Union has endorsed the effort by Senators Ted Cruz and David Vitter to close the loophole in the National Voting Registration Act that prevents states from requiring proof of citizenship to vote.

ACU Chairman Al Cardenas said he applauds Senators Cruz and Vitter’s quick response to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down a portion of the Arizona voting registration law.

“Since the Supreme Court has ruled that current federal law precludes this reasonable requirement, it’s up to Congress to change the law,” Cardenas said.  “Justice Scalia said in his majority opinion that there would be nothing to preclude the federal government from allowing states to require proof of citizenship.  Proof of citizenship is a requirement in just about every democratic nation in our hemisphere and the United States should be no exception. Voter fraud is real and we should take every reasonable action to prevent it.”

Cardenas said ACU will urge the adoption of the amendment during the Senate deliberations on the immigration bill.

Founded in 1964, the American Conservative Union (ACU) is the oldest and largest grassroots conservative organization in the nation. For almost fifty years, ACU has served as an umbrella organization harnessing the collective strength of conservative organizations fighting for Americans who are concerned with liberty, personal responsibility, traditional values, and strong national defense. ACU defines conservatism, grows conservatism, and wins for conservatism.
