WASHINGTON DC — The American Conservative Union (ACU) applauds President Trump’s nomination of former Congressman Scott Garrett to be president of the Export-Import Bank. Garrett’s 14-year career in Congress reflected a highly principled approach to issues and gained him one of the highest-ever ACU Lifetime Ratings for that length of time, 99.14 out of 100.
Garrett is uniquely qualified for this post, having served as a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee, which has oversight of the agency. We agree with President Trump and Financial Services Committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling that Garrett is the right choice to “steer the troubled agency towards reform.” This is an agency with a long record of waste, fraud and abuse. Time after time, the bank’s former presidents and members have promised Congress to follow through on reforms, then resisted every effort to carry them out. To make matters worse, President Obama imposed his global warming agenda on the agency by prohibiting financing for coal-fired plants or other energy production projects that he didn’t favor.
Under Scott Garrett’s leadership, we believe the agency will have someone who is dedicated to either eliminating or making much-needed reforms and ACU urges conservatives to rally behind Scott Garrett’s nomination for president of the Export-Import Bank.
