ALEXANDRIA- Today, the American Conservative Union (ACU) cheered the reintroduction of Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley’s legislation to reform our broken sentencing and corrections system. The Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act of 2017 would refocus the country’s criminal-justice policies by helping law enforcement devote more time and money to catching and detaining the most serious criminals, not wasting lives – and taxpayers’ money – by housing low-level nonviolent offenders in expensive federal prisons.
Chairman Grassley (ACUF Lifetime Rating of 84%) should be commended for his continuous efforts on the fight to reform our Criminal Justice system and by bringing the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act back for his Senate colleagues to consider. He is continuing the fight to bring real change to the way our law enforcement operates and helping to push for positive reforms that will not only save time and money but make sure resources are allocated in a way that is better and more productive for our men and women in uniform who risk their lives every day.
States have led the charge on these reforms, and the results are undeniable: shrinking prison populations, smaller corrections budgets and crime rates that are falling faster than in the states that have not adopted similar common sense reforms. Now it’s time for the elected officials in Washington to do their job by passing their own reforms to our Criminal Justice system in areas where only Congress can affect change.
ACU strongly supports the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act of 2017 and we urge the Senate to support the legislation and work towards bringing more conservatives on board and embrace Criminal Justice reform.
